South Korean President arrested
Kathmandu. South Korean President Yun Suk-yeol has been arrested. This is the first time that a president has been arrested in South Korea. The Corruption Investigation Office and the police are jointly investigating him in a martial law case. Although there were previous attempts to arrest him, the presidential security team had failed. However, the BBC reported that he was arrested using excessive force in the second attempt.
President Yeol had declared martial law on December 3. He argued that this step was necessary to protect the country from North Korean communist forces. However, he withdrew his decision within 6 hours after protests from his own party leaders and opposition parties. After this incident, an impeachment motion was passed by the parliament on December 14. He has been suspended from office since then.
The matter is pending before the Constitutional Court. According to South Korean law, the Constitutional Court has the final authority to decide whether to remove him from office after an impeachment.
Officials from the Corruption Investigation Office had asked President Yeol to appear three times to question him about the steps he had taken. However, he was arrested by the court, saying that he was obstructing the investigation when he did not appear.
A large crowd of his supporters gathered to protest his arrest. After his arrest, President Yole claimed that his arrest was illegal. But he said that he accepted the arrest to prevent bloodshed.
