The head coach of the Portuguese national team, Fernando Santos, has been fired

Lisbon: Fernando Santos, the head coach of the Portuguese national team, has been sacked after being eliminated from the quarter-finals of the World Cup. In the quarter-finals of the World Cup held in Qatar, Portugal was eliminated from the World Cup after losing 1-0 to the African country Morocco.

He was appointed coach of Portugal eight years ago. Santos led Portugal to their first European Championship title in 2016. Similarly, in the year 2018-19, he also made the champion of the first edition of the Nations League.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) said it was “the right time to start a new cycle”. Although the contract runs until the 2024 European Championship, Santos has stepped down by mutual consent, according to international media.

FPF also thanked Santos and his team saying that it is a privilege to have a coach like Santos leading the national team.
